A petition to have community gardening groups be exempted from the £45 annual brown bin charge will be considered by Edinburgh councillors.
Some 201 people signed the petition over two months, which asks for action on the charges which cover uplift of green waste in the council.
It will be heard at next week’s Transport and Environment Committee on Thursday, November 13.
Councillors will decide if the committee should take action on the request, if it should be referred to another committee, or if it should be disregarded.
If they decide to take action, councillors have several options, including requesting a report on council officers on what implementing the change could look like.
The text of the petition reads: “Volunteer groups across the city currently have to pay £45 to have their green waste uplifted.
“These groups provide a valuable contribution to the community and should not be charged.”
At present, most users of the garden waste collection service pay £45 for a permit each year, which covers 12 months from the start of each November.
Brown bin collections happen every two weeks, but the service takes a holiday off during the festive period.
For collection to take place, a permit must be visible on the brown bin.
Councillors will discuss the petition at the next Transport and Environment Committee meeting on Thursday, November 13 at the City Chambers off High Street.
