Broughton Village Hall
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
Pints will soon be pulled at a village hall in Tweeddale after a Scottish Borders Council planner deemed that a conversion bid would offer “significant benefits” to the community.
Last year a public consultation was launched in Broughton over the future use of the temporary community shop attached to the village hall in Main Street.
The space had become available to rent within the community hall after the much-loved village shop moved back to newly renovated premises.
Now an application submitted to SBC to convert the vacant space into a community-owned and operated village pub has been rubber-stamped.
Broughton Village Hall is a community venue offering a large hall, small hall, meeting room and fully fitted kitchen.
The hall facilities are all for hire and are utilised for regular classes, groups, societies and one-off events.
In his report approving the application, Ranald Dods, SBC planning officer, states: “The Hall Cottage is at the southern end of Broughton Village Hall and is an integral part of that building
“The application form states that the community would own and operate that public house.
“The proposal would be small scale and would necessitate the construction of two small extensions to the rear of the building.
“The change of use would see the loss of part of then building which is currently used for community use.
“As the use as a public house would offer a significant benefit to the local community and would not detract from the character and amenity of the area, support can be given in this instance.
“Town centre first policies will not be undermined by this small scale local facility. Had circumstances been different, I may have reached a different conclusion.”
