Lannan Bakery in Stockbridge has become viral on the internet causing a constant long queue outside the shop.
Due to the pavement outside the shop being small and narrow, it can force pedestrians off of the pavement and onto the road. This has caused complaints and concerns regarding the safety of pedestrians, especially the young children at Stockbridge Primary School nearby.
Bakery owner, Darcie Maher, made a decision to hire what she calls a ‘queue warden’ to control the long queue outside the shop and prevent pedestrians from being affected by an unorganised queue system.
Darcie Maher shared a statement on the decision to hire the queue warden, saying, “The safety of the children and parents at Stockbridge Primary School is a priority for us at Lannan. We continue to work closely with the school and have engaged a queue warden to manage the queue at Lannan. A new full time member of staff has been brought on for this
purpose.”
The bakery has hired this new member of staff in an attempt to ensure the pavement is not taken over by the long queues and that pedestrians are able to pass safely, without stepping onto the road.
A recent BBC article referred to Lannan’s queue warden as a ‘bouncer’ causing the bakery to respond calling the information shared by the BBC as ‘false’.
Commenting under BBC Scotland News’ Instagram post surrounding Lannan, the bakery said, “Just to let you know this is false information. We havent hired a bouncer. We have hired an extra member of front of house staff who tends to the queue every morning with refreshments and menus. They also ensure the pavement is safe for pedestrians to pass. We don’t have a liscene to hire security professionals.”
Responding to the ‘bouncer’ allegations, Lannan Bakery has ensured that the new member of staff is not a security professional and only ensures that the pavement is safe. This choice to hire a ‘queue warden’ was made due to complaints from local parents. The bakery is locked near Stockbridge Primary School so hiring an additional member of staff to tend to the daily long queues is to make sure that pedestrians passing the bakery safely have room on the pavement to get by.
