Community groups, schools and good causes across Midlothian are being given the chance to each win £500 worth of vouchers to purchase new electrical products as part of an initiative to promote responsible recycling. The Powering Communities campaign has been put forward by not-for-profit Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) producer recycling scheme, REPIC, in partnership with Midlothian council.
With WEEE being one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK, REPIC is a major force behind WEEE recycling, successfully financing collection, treatment and recycling of over half the UK’s used electrical items.
This year, REPIC is launching its Powering Communities campaign to mark the tenth anniversary since the Government’s WEEE Directive was introduced. The organisation is also celebrating its long-term partnerships with ten selected local authorities across the UK, including Midlothian.
The total prize pot of £5,000 is open to any local community group, school, or good cause – such as not-for-profit organisations and registered charities.
They simply need to answer: “What electrical product do you need and how will it will make a difference?” Followed by: “What is the name of the REPIC Robot mascot?”
Phil Riddell, Midlothian Council says: “We’ve worked in partnership with REPIC for over 10 years and in that time the partnership has provided County wide opportunities for residents to recycle their waste electrical appliances and materials through our community recycling sites. This initiative is a great opportunity to bring further benefit to communities and to encourage responsible recycling. We look forward to seeing who the lucky winner is, good luck to all taking part.”
Mark Burrows-Smith, CEO of REPIC says: “We’re proud to have collected and treated over two million tonnes of WEEE to date and hope that the Powering Communities campaign will encourage people to think about responsibly recycling their old electricals, particularly when they purchase new ones. It’s great to team up with Mid Lothian Council and we’re looking forward to receiving the entries.”
To enter, fill in the online form via REPIC’s Responsible Recycling website www.responsible-recycling.co.uk.
The closing date for applications is 19th June 2017. The prize awarded will be a £500 Amazon voucher. All eligible applications that answer the question correctly will be considered – full details and terms and conditions are available on the website.
