All primary schools in Midlothian are expected to welcome children back to classes next Wednesday, August 12.

The local authority’s head of education has written to parents to confirm she expects all youngsters who attend primary school to return on the date following Scottish Government guidelines.

However some phased returns are likely for older children with secondary schools given a later deadline of Tuesday, August 18, to organise the return of all pupils.

Fiona Robertson said any parents concerned about their child’s return would be able to contact the schools directly from Monday (Aug 10) for advice.

The local authority is also urging worried families to go online to the national website for information and support.

Mrs Robertson said: “We anticipate our primary schools will be able to re-open to all children at the start of the academic session on Wednesday, August 12,with no social distancing, if the coronavirus remains suppressed.

“We expect that all of our secondary schools will have all children and young people in full time by August 18, at the very latest.

“If you have any concerns about your child’s return to school, please contact your child’s school directly from 10 August.”

Families of children who attend the council’s specialist provision facilities or Saltersgate School are expected to be contacted by staff ahead of return to confirm individual arrangements.

Details about transport, break time and school lunches will be confirmed with parents as it is made available.

Mrs Robertson told parents and carers: “Our staff are very much looking forward to welcoming your child back to school and working closely with you to progress their learning and achievements.”
