Local litter bin
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
Midlothian Council has put together a plan to transform Midlothian’s public areas by installing and refurbishing litter bins.
The public litter bin upgrade plan will see 350 bins either installed, refurbished or replaced by the end of 2025. This plan has begun as new bins have been installed on John Street in Penicuik alongside shopping areas in both Dalkeith and Bonnyrigg.
The plan is an attempt to transfrom Midlothian’s public spaces. The next step surrounding the litter bin issue is to install more bins by bus stops, school travel corridors, dog walking hot spots, public seating areas and high streets, such as shop fronts.

Cabinet Member for Community Facilities, Councillor Dianne Alexander, said surrounding the bin uprgades, “Ensuring we provide the facilities people need in the right places is vitally important. The Neighbourhood Environment Team have been working on this behind the scenes for a while now, and it’s great that residents are able to see these fantastic new and refurbished bins starting to appear more widely.”
The plan was made possible due to the council’s Neighbourhood Environment Team successful bid for £51,000 by the government backed ‘UK Shared Prosperity Fund’ for their ‘levelling up’ scheme.
The Neighbourhood Environment Team is helping to re-distribute bins to under-utilised areas from areas with a large amount of bins, alongside fully replacing some to bring the total number of waste bins in Midlothian to 500.
Councillor Diane Alexander said, “This project is also a fantastic example of making best use of the resources we have to improve the quality of the local environment. Not only will there be a significant positive impact on the look of our outdoor spaces, but it’s also going to make it much easier for our teams to keep Midlothian clean and tidy, which is another massive plus.”
