Construction site overview
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
Dalkeith residents will see pumping equipment and temporary road closures in their area this week, as the Mining Remediation Authority works to manage water levels in the historical mine workings beneath part of the town.
A potential blockage has been identified in the Old Fordell tunnel, which naturally drains the historical underground mine workings linked to the former Bilston Glen colliery. Water flow from the tunnel has reduced significantly, causing levels to rise underground.
Pumping equipment is now being installed to move water safely from the mine workings, through a new pipe along Lauder Road, to the construction site adjacent to Newmills Bridge where the Mining Remediation Authority is building a new mine water treatment scheme. It will then be discharged, as it was before, at the drainage tunnel mouth into the River South Esk.
Road closures will be in place while this essential work takes place, and the Mining Remediation Authority is working with Midlothian Council to minimise disruption.
A spokesperson for the Mining Remediation Authority said: “Residents may notice some noise and traffic disruption, and we are sorry for any inconvenience our works cause.
“Local people know their area best. Anyone who notices anything unusual – such as water pooling where it should not, dips in the ground, or unexpected noises underground – should call our 24-hour hazard line immediately on 0800 288 4242.
“We’re working with a range of partner organisations to progress and resolve this as quickly as we can. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep the community informed.
“For questions or feedback, contact our customer services team by emailing [email protected] or calling 0345 762 6848.”
The pumps will be located off Woodburn Court and are due to be delivered today (Tuesday 20 January).
Road closures are planned for the duration of the pumping works – along the junctions of James Lean Avenue with Newmills Road and Woodburn Road with Lauder Road – and signage and diversions will be in place.
The Mining Remediation Authority will also provide updates on its dedicated webpage at www.miningremediation.co.uk/locations/dalkeith/.
