People living and working across Midlothian and East Lothian are being asked to be alert for vulnerable adults in their communities who may be at risk of harm.
Marking National Adult Support and Protection Day, the local authorities are encouraging residents to be more aware of adults at risk of harms such as, financial, physical abuse, neglect, self-neglect, self-harm, emotional abuse and gender-based violence.
Risk of being harmed can be greater due to factors such as ill health, trauma and physical or mental health conditions, and sometimes an adult may not be aware that they are being harmed or may find it difficult to speak up. Harm against adults can happen anywhere – in someone’s home, where they work, or in a public place – and is often caused by the people closest to them. It can even happen in places responsible for keeping someone safe, such as a care home, hospital or day centre.
Adult Support and Protection Day takes place every year on 20th February and East Lothian and Midlothian Public Protection Committee is urging everyone to report any concerns to ensure those in need are able to access support and can be protected from harm.
Keith Mackay, Chair of East Lothian Midlothian Public Protection Committee said:
“We know it is hard to be the person who takes that step and makes the referral for someone they are concerned about. Sometimes we assume someone else has probably done something about the concerns, especially if there are already some services involved with the adult, but you might just have the missing piece of the jigsaw that shows they need support and protection.
“We all have a role to play in keeping vulnerable people safe. National Adult Support and Protection Day provides the opportunity to remind all of us that it is everyone’s responsibility to protect adults who may be at risk of harm. If you see something you’re worried about, then please say something.”
Fiona Wilson, Chief Officer of East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership added:
“Protecting adults at risk of harm is a core responsibility for our services however this is not something we can do on our own. Communities across East Lothian can help identify early concerns within their friends, families and neighbours. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and report it.”
Urging that it is important for everyone to speak up about any concerns they have, as the person may not be able to do so themselves, the committee have asked that iIf you are worried that someone is at risk of harm or neglect from others, or harming or neglecting themselves, you should report your concerns to Social Work in East Lothian or Midlothian.
The EMPPC website www.emppc.co.uk has more information on how to pass on your concerns or alternatively, you can contact the Police on 101 or call 999 if you believe the person is in immediate danger.
