Riverside Healthcare Centre, Selkirk
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
Residents at a Selkirk care home are positive about the staff who look after them and services they receive – but some improvements are needed.
That was the conclusion of two representatives of the Care Inspectorate who paid a recent unannounced visit to Riverside Healthcare Centre in Bridge Street.
The service is registered to support 45 older people who need either nursing or residential care.
Among the findings were that staff treated people using the service with kindness and respect.
People benefited from a variety of stimulating activities which had a positive impact on their well-being.
Improvements had been made to management oversight of medication processes, enabling people to feel confident they would receive safe support with their prescribed medicines.
It was concluded that the manager should continue to develop the service’s refurbishment plan to ensure it supports timely repairs and replacement of items.
Meanwhile, improvements are required to ensure recruitment practices are safe and compliant.
The service was rated ‘good’ for supporting people’s well-being and its leadership and ‘adequate’ for its staff team.
The report states: “People were positive about their experience of living at Riverside Healthcare Centre, describing the atmosphere as welcoming and homely.
“Individuals told us ‘staff are friendly’, ‘they treat me very well’, ‘I can have a good laugh with them’, and ‘I feel safe here’.”
