Leading budget hotel chain Premier Inn is set to nearly treble the size of its hotel in Lasswade after saying there is a growing demand for low price accommodation in Midlothian.
The hotel company has been given planning permission to increase its current Inn which lies just off the A7 from 40 bedrooms to 115 rooms with a new extension.
The move will mean the demolition of the Table Table restaurant, also operated by Whitbread who own the hotel chain, on the site with a guest breakfast room created in the new hotel.
In their planning statement to the council, representatives for Premier Inn state the expanded facility would benefit locals with a positive economic impact as well as enhancing visitor accommodation available in the area.
They added: “Premier Inn has identified a considerable demand for additional budget hotel accommodation in this location. It is also acting to reconfigure the restaurant proposition to ensure it best fits customers’ needs in this location.
“This proposal for additional bedrooms and an adjusted restaurant proposition would meet Premier Inn’s operational requirements at the location and address the demand for its services.”
No objections to the proposals were lodged and planners said that while the additional rooms would generate more traffic the removal of the restaurant and its associated visitors would alleviate concerns about the impact.
They stated: “A significant change in circumstance is the removal of the restaurant, which contributed to significant trip rates. When considered as a whole, the hotel would experience a daily reduction of 92 two-way vehicle movements following the removal of the restaurant and increase in hotel rooms.”
However, the restaurant has been closed to the general public for a number of years now as it only serves guests staying at the adjacent Premier Inn.
Planners approved the extension and additional car parking on the site.
