The latest stage in the revitalisation of an area of Galashiels has been enthusiastically endorsed by residents.
Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA) held a community feedback event last week.
The gathering gave residents of Croft Street, Huddersfield Street, Greenbank Street, Hill Street, Galabank Street, and the surrounding neighbourhood, the chance to see how their ideas will shape the next phase of regeneration plans for the area.
The project, delivered by SBHA in partnership with Oberlanders Architects and LUC Landscape Architects, builds on a 2022 feasibility study and the success of a funding application to the UK Government’s Community Regeneration Partnership Fund, which is administered by Scottish Borders Council.
Following essential flat roof replacements, the remaining funding is now being directed towards public realm improvements that will enhance safety, accessibility, and community well-being.
During a consultation event in June this year, residents had the opportunity to review design proposals, vote on their priorities, and discuss ideas with the project team.
Voting and feedback confirmed strong community support for measures such as new and refurbished railings to improve safety and appearance, upgrades to drying greens, including grass, paving, and new facilities.
There was also approval for secure cycle and pram storage through re-purposed under-croft spaces and external bike stores.
Timber fencing and planting to enhance boundaries and encourage biodiversity was also endorsed.
Despite the rain showers, the event, which was held at a block in Croft Street, was full of community spirit, with children and families enjoying activities such as pebble painting.
SBHA’s Warm & Well team was on hand, giving away energy-saving items to help residents save on heating costs. A mix of SBHA tenants and private homeowners attended, sharing their views and priorities for the neighbourhood.
SBHA was also delighted to welcome John Lamont MP and Euan Jardine, the leader of Scottish Borders Council and Galashiels elected representative.
Director of property services Caroline Purcell said: “This project is about more than just physical improvements – it’s about creating safer, greener, and more welcoming spaces for everyone.
“We are grateful to residents for their continued involvement in shaping these plans and would also like to thank John Lamont MP and Cllr Euan Jardine for joining us at the event and for their ongoing support.”
Looking ahead, SBHA confirmed that procurement for the works will begin in late autumn 2025, with upgrades starting in November. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2026, when a community opening event will be held to celebrate the transformation.
The Croft Street area regeneration continues to be delivered in close collaboration with residents, ensuring investment brings long-term benefits to the whole community.
