Clovenfords Bridge opening
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
The sun put its hat on as a rural community gathered to celebrate the bridging of a gap.
A new footbridge on Caddonfoot Road in Clovenfords was officially opened on Friday, April 24.
The bridge has addressed a problematic divide and ensures that a playing field is no longer a bridge too far for village folk.
The project saw removal of the old bridge in February to install a new, accessible structure as part of a wider development of the recreational park and community space.
After three years of preparation and fund-raising, the bridge gives full access to the village’s playing field.
Support from Scottish Borders Council paid for a design and the necessary surveys to achieve planning permission, and the new design eliminates a steep stairway to give level access for prams and wheelchairs, as well as able-bodied adults and children.
A spokesperson for Clovenfords & District Community Council said: “It was truly wonderful to see our community come together in such strong support of a local project.
“A very special thank you to our Lord Lieutenant, Lady Catherine Maxwell Stuart, and her Air Cadet for officially opening the bridge, it made the occasion all the more memorable.
“And of course, thank you to our amazing community for being there, it meant so much to see so many smiling faces.
“The sun shone upon Clovenfords, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect day.”
