The Filmhouse on Lothian Road
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
The iconic Edinburgh Filmhouse on Lothian Road has removed its exterior scaffolding since the beginning of its £1.7 million refurbishment that began in January.
Closing in October 2022 due to parent charity, Centre for the Moving Image, ceasing trading, the iconic Edinburgh institution shut its doors. With the UK Government and Edinburgh Council helping to fund a refurbishment, work began in January of this year.
Receiving multi-year funding from Screen Scotland and Creative Scotland, the Filmhouse has received funds far beyond what they would have received from a commercial basis. These charities have been pivotal in the refurbishment with the Filmhouse stating on their recent update, “Screen Scotland have played an absolutely pivotal role in advancing the cause of re-opening Filmhouse, and we can now also thank them for ensuring Filmhouse has the support it needs to deliver our mission from launch all the way into 2028.”
The new Filmhouse will include a revamped bar and cafe area, alongside a brand new fourth screen that will extend its previous capacity.
With work beginning in January, there is no set date for re-opening but with recent developments in funding refurbishment has begun to re-open the iconic cinema to the public.
