Wallyford Learning Campus
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Marie Sharp
Council officers had to scrap plans for fencing around new school rugby pitches to save more than £100,000 and bring it in within its budget.
Midlothian firm Sportsmasters UK Ltd have won the contract to create two grass rugby pitches and a long jump area at Wallyford Learning Campus for just over £400,000.
A report to East Lothian Councillors says the firm was the only one to submit an offer for the contract but it was initially estimated to cost £517,000.
It says the councils’ housing development team work with contractors to carry out an engineering exercise to find ways to reduce the costs to within its budget and agreed to remove fencing and gates in the original plans.
Instead, it says landscaping will be used to create screening between new housing neighbouring the pitches, bringing the cost down by £115,000.The pitches will be used by Rosehill High School, at the campus and the local community.
A report to members says: “The council is required to provide suitable community sports pitches /facilities for schools and new housing developments.
“The site is located adjacent to the new Rosehill High School and a number of new housing developments. The council has identified the need for new rugby pitches in this area of new development to encourage and grow the sport both in the new school and in the growing community.”
Wallyford Learning Campus opened two year ago and already has two astro pitches, gym facilities and a running track on site all of which are available to the school and community groups to use.
