Scotland’s first ever baby sloth has been born at Edinburgh Zoo.

The Linne’s two-toed sloth named Atty was born yesterday to first-time parents Feira and Nico, both aged six, marking a historic milestone for the zoo.

Keepers at the wildlife conservation charity have named the baby boy Atty in honour of Sir David Attenborough, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday.

For the first six months of his life Atty will grip tightly to mum Feira’s stomach and will soon begin learning which leaves are safe to eat by sampling food directly from her mouth.

Head keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, Jess Brown, explained: “This is groundbreaking not just for Edinburgh Zoo, but for Scotland. Seeing a sloth baby clinging to mum for the very first time has been so special for the whole team and we can’t wait for visitors to see little Atty.”

“He is already showing plenty of personality and visitors might spot a tiny face peeking out from mum’s fur. Nico and Feira are both beautiful animals and a fan-favourite with our visitors so we’re confident he’ll be a big hit!”.

Atty and his mother are currently resting with visitors welcome to visit the newly born at the sloth house tomorrow. The zoo explained that opening times of the sloth house will vary over the coming weeks and visitors are recommended to check opening hours on arrival at the zoo.
