The Edinburgh Short Film Festival has returned for its 15th year, being hosted at the recently re-opened Filmhouse.
Beginning on Friday and ending on Sunday, the festival has been explained as going ‘magnificently well’ by festival planners with a positive response from audiences and guests.
Running for 15 years, the short film festival originally evolved from the Leith Short Film Festival in 2011 now becoming a popular annual event dedicated to screening short films from the capital, Scotland and around the world.
The festival called the Edinburgh Filmhouse their home since 2014, with exception to occasionally being hosted at Summerhall, up until the cinema closed its doors in 2022. Since re-opening in June of this year the iconic Edinburgh cinema welcomed back the annual celebration, marking a significant milestone in the Filmhouses history.
This year’s festival is hosting a strong programme of screenings and guest talks, such as Locarno and HotDocs Jury winners, alongside winners and nominees from a host of international film festivals, including New Cannes, Venice, Festival Regard and the Berlinale.
The ESFF also welcomes Stanley Kubrick’s producer, Jan Harlan, for a masterclass on Kubrick’s filmmaking insights.
Festival Director Paul Bruce explained:
“Our 15th edition has been going magnificently well so far and we’re delighted with the response from the audiences and guests.
“We’ve had some full houses and the panel discussions have been fascinating with some lovely responses from audinece members.”
Talking on the significance of returning to the Filmhouse, he added:
“We’re loving the new Filmhouse and we’re delighted to be back. We are excited about the rest of this year’s programme beginning on Wednesday.’
Reopening on the 27th of June, the Filmhouse underwent a £2 million renovation alongside new leadership and funding that secured the cinema up until 2028, allowing the iconic building to begin hosting popular events again, such as this year’s short film festival.
The festival ends on Sunday this week. For more information on the Edinburgh Short Film Festival click here.
