A SNP councillor says she has been suspended by her party after being charged in relation to the discovery of a £500k cannabis farm in Berwickshire.

Aileen Orr, 70, and son Duncan, 29, were arrested following the discovery of a cannabis farm at a property near Paxton in February last year.

Mrs Orr, who ”vehemently” denies the charges, is expected to appear in court at a later date.

She has expressed disappointment at being suspended from a party she has been a member of for 55 years.

The SNP say Councillor Orr had left the party while the investigation continued.

She remains in her role as an elected representative for the East Berwickshire ward, and will sit as an independent.

The cannabis farm was discovered after police were called to a report of men banging on the window of a remote property near Paxton late at night on February 3 last year.

When officers arrived they found no trace of the men, but they did subsequently find cannabis with an estimated street value of about £500,000.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has confirmed that the procurator fiscal had received a report “concerning a 70-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man in connection with an alleged incident in the Scottish Borders on 3 February 2024”.
