After last year’s bonfire night disorder in Edinburgh, MP Ian Murray has sent a letter to all supermarkets in his constituency (South Edinburgh) urging them to stop selling fireworks.

With all the supermarkets agreeing to halt the sale of fireworks, Ian Murray is hoping to prevent last year’s issues.

In his letter he explained: “The criminal incidents linked to fireworks misuse last year were deeply concerning, in my constituency and across Edinburgh, we saw a care home terrorised, a petrol station put under siege with fireworks fired across the forecourt, property damaged, and local people left in fear.”

Sharing the news on Facebook, Ian Murray’s post has received a lot of traction, attracting around 215 comments with majority in support.

More recently, he also wrote to Costco in Midlothian, urging them to follow the example of other supermarkets.

Ian Murray said:

“Last year, many got in touch with me after the shocking scenes of fireworks disorder in our community. Homes and businesses were attacked, people were left frightened in their own neighbourhoods, and our emergency services were put in danger. This is why I welcome the decision by supermarkets to refrain from selling fireworks this year.

“However, there is still more to do, and I will keep pressing for action from supermarkets, from the Scottish Government, from the Police, and the Council, so that we can stop a repeat of last year’s shocking disorder. I hope that this year we can make sure Bonfire Night is a safe and enjoyable time for everyone.”

With supermarkets in his constituency agreeing to stop the sale of fireworks, Ian Murray is hoping other stores will do the same to prevent what he explained as a ‘meaningful step to help protect the safety and welleing of the communities he serves’.
