Swimmers Make Splash at Midlothian Sports Awards

Paralympian Scott Quin was crowned Senior Sports Personality at the 2016 Midlothian Sports Awards staged at Lasswade High School on Friday evening.

The accolade for the Loanhead-based swimmer, 26, capped off a memorable year after he won a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke SB14 final in Rio.

Quin said: “It has been an unforgettable year for me and to win the award after Rio is a special feeling.

“I’m proud to come from Midlothian and the support I’ve received from everybody in the local area has been unbelievable.”

In the senior category, both Keiran Griffiths (Tae Kwon Do) and Ciara Donlevy (Trampolining) were highly commended for their performances in their respective sports.

Another swimmer, 14-year-old Fraser Wilson won the Junior Sports Personality award after another impressive year of achievement in the pool.

Fraser, who competes and trains with the Midlothian Swimming Club, is a multiple Scottish national age group champion and schools champion.

In the junior category, Rory Smith (gymnastics) and Caitlin Blair (ballet) were also highly commended for their progress in their respective sports.

Scottish champions Kirkhill Bowling Gents Fours received the Senior Team of the Year award while successful junior football club Bonnyrigg Rose were highly commended in the aftermath of winning the Superleague.

Lasswade HS under-18 girls’ football team were named Junior Team of the Year after winning the Scottish Cup in dramatic fashion while Midlothian Amateur Boxing Club were highly commended for their achievements.

Midlothian Amateur Boxing Club’s Ally Quilietti was crowned Coach of the Year while Neil Robertson (gymnastics) and Lynne Sturgeon (disability swimming) were both highly commended.

David Reilly deservedly won the award for Services to Local Sport after dedicating 32 years to coaching at Danderhall Judo Club.

Joanne Smyth won Volunteer of the Year for her contribution to local gymnastics with Tom Cramb (American Football) and Lauren Watters (football) both being highly commended for their roles in the development of local sport.

The Provost, Councillor Joe Wallace, who presented the awards on the night, said: “It was a fantastic evening and an opportunity to celebrate the excellence and dedication of sportspeople in our county.

“Congratulation to all the winners – hearing their stories was inspirational and the list of local achievements, ranging from Paralympic medals to Scottish championships, was phenomenal.

“That level of success is down to the commitment of the sportspeople involved, but also can be attributed to the dedication of the coaches and volunteers who help make these dreams become a reality.”
