The Karen Henderson Legacy Fund and the first fundraising challenge, in aid of Make 2nds Count, are officially launching on 2nd May at The Restoration Yard. The event will be hosted by one of Karen’s favourite entertainers, Grant Stott, and will bring together family and friends in a small celebration of Karen’s life. Local dancers from KIC Dance will be performing, as the first participants set off on their ‘500 mile challenge’. The small event will adhere to current restrictions.

Karen passed away as a result of her diagnosis of secondary breast cancer earlier in the year but family, friends and Make 2nds Count are launching the fund to ensure that the legacy of the star of ‘Sunshine on Dalkeith’ will be supporting patients, in particular their wellbeing.

From the start of her diagnosis, Karen fundraised tirelessly for secondary breast cancer with her own flair and style, and was passionate and dedicated to raising awareness and being a patient champion for Make 2nds Count.

The first event for Karen’s fund is ‘The 500 mile challenge’, in a nod to her love of The Proclaimers. Those taking part in the challenge can choose how they want to cover the distance in a year, be it walk, cycle, paddle, swim or dance. A programme of events to raise money for the fund is planned throughout the year.

Alistair Henderson, Karen’s husband says:

“Karen would have been delighted to know that she inspired this legacy fund and that her memory will live on through it. She loved life and despite carrying the burden of secondary breast cancer her approach was always to live life to the fullest. We hope through her fund to help others similarly affected to do the same and your support would be greatly appreciated.”

Lisa Fleming, founder of Make 2nds Count says:

“There are too many words for Karen – determined, warm, positive, beautiful, always helping others, including me as my ‘partner in crime’ in our chemotherapy unit. Her legacy will be used to help to give hope to others with secondary breast cancer and to allow them to feel a little better about themselves, whether an oncology massage, attending a retreat or help with a wig – the way you always did when you were with Karen.”
