Midlothian MP, Danielle Rowley, congratulated the newly elected Members of Scottish Youth Parliament during a Westminster Hall debate on Votes at 16 today.

As Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Votes at 16, Ms. Rowley was arguing in favour of extending the franchise to 16 and 17 year olds.

The APPG released a report yesterday which draws together evidence gathered by the all-party group throughout its first year, with contributions from parliamentarians from across the political spectrum, academics, youth organisations, campaigners and think tanks.

Danielle Rowley MP said:

“Congratulations to the new Midlothian MSYPs Erin Campbell, Blaine Ferguson, Emma Murray and Isabelle Headon – I am sure you will all do a wonderful job in representing the young people of Midlothian, and I look forward to working with you all.

“I am so encouraged to see how engaged young people are with politics in Midlothian.

“From emailing me about national issues, holding a musical protest outside the council, to the questions and comments I hear when I visit schools and colleges shows the deep interest Midlothian’s young people care about their communities and the world around them.

“It is clear that the time for votes at 16 is now.”
