Welcome to Jedburgh road sign
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
Transformation of former industrial land which would pave the way for a regeneration project in Jedburgh will start next week.
Jedburgh Gasworks is a 19th century industrial area on the edge of the town centre.
It is now identified as a significant redevelopment site for affordable housing, business, and community regeneration, with projects aiming to transform it into a valuable asset for the town.
Scottish Borders Council’s Local Development Plan (LDP) identifies the former gasworks as a key opportunity for new gateway project, specifically for roadside food, drink and small retail units to boost tourism and local jobs, replacing an unattractive industrial site with a modern, attractive commercial hub.
Following the successful completion of ground investigation works, Scotland Gas Networks (SGN) is now about to begin environmental works on the land.
Specialist contractors are to be on the site for eight weeks from Monday, January 12 until the end of March.
The works, which have been approved by Scottish Borders Council, will involve some excavation, including mixing and infilling, which will be carried out during working hours, from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Residents in the Pleasance area of the town have been advised there is the potential for noise, odour, dust and vibration during the course of the work.
A spokesperson for SGN said: “However, these issues will be pro-actively monitored and managed by our specialists contractors Biogenie.
“Throughout the works, ongoing monitoring will take place and where deemed necessary mitigation measures will be employed. The methodology and mitigation methods have been agreed with the council.
“We will work pro-actively to minimise the impact our work will have on our neighbours and if you would like to discuss the project further, we will be able to arrange a meeting, either in person or virtually.”
Anyone who has questions regarding the works can contact SGN’s customer services team on 0800 912 1700.
