The Best One convenience store in Newtongrange.
Tributes have been paid to a Midlothian shopkeeper who died at his store last week.
Councillor Stuart McKenzie told members of the Police and Fire and Rescue Board on Monday that the community of Newtongrange had been rocked by the ‘tragic events’ of the weekend.
Police and emergency services were called to the Best One Shop in the town centre on Friday evening after concerns were raised.
The 69-year-old shopkeeper, known locally as Bash, died at the scene.
Councillor McKenzie, board convenor, said: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Bash and anyone affected in the community.”
Police attending the board meeting told members an investigation into the death was ongoing and officers were working to provide support to the family and the wider community.
The shopkeeper was well known in the community and on social media many remembered him as a ‘lovely man’ as they paid their own tributes following the news.
One woman said: “He welcomed me to Newtongrange over 18 years ago and all ways asked how I was. He will be missed by all the people he knew and helped.”
Another added: “So sad thoughts r (sic) with his family and friends. Such a lovely man.”
