Last year's Charity Fun Took, run by the Scottish Borders Council Lanark Lodge
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
An invitation has been issued to bolster the charitable efforts of two Borders disability support services.
Building on the fantastic success of last year’s Charity Fun Dook, Scottish Borders Council-run Lanark Lodge in Duns and Rutherford Square in Kelso are gearing up for even bigger and better fundraising activities in the coming months.
In 2024, around 40 service users, parents, carers, staff, and friends braved the chilly waters at Spittal Beach, Berwick-upon-Tweed, raising an impressive £4,397.
The funds were split evenly between the two settings and following consultation with service users on how best to use the money, the donations helped fund new sensory equipment for Rutherford Square and an interactive touch screen for service users at Lanark Lodge.
Now, the teams are planning a new calendar of fundraising events. Ideas being considered include another sponsored swim, a bingo night, and a Santa Run as part of the annual Christmas celebrations – all with the aim of making a real difference to the lives of those they support.
To help them with the planning and implementation of their programme, they’re looking for new members to join the Friends of Lanark Lodge and Rutherford Square, a volunteer group set up to support with fundraising and other activities.
The group plays a vital role in enhancing opportunities and experiences for the individuals who attend the two settings, working closely with staff, families, and the wider community, and the contribution they make is greatly valued and appreciated.
Ann Hill, parent and secretary of the Friends group, said: “Last year’s Fun Dook was a fantastic example of what we can achieve when we come together as a community.
“The money raised has already made a huge difference, and we’re excited to build on that success. We’re also keen to welcome new members to the Friends of Lanark Lodge and Rutherford Square, whether you want to help organise events or fundraising activities, provide support on the day, or just cheer us on we’d love to hear from you.”
Councillor David Parker, SBC’s executive member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Lanark Lodge and Rutherford Square are at the very heart of their communities, providing not just essential support, but also friendship, opportunities, and a real sense of belonging for people with learning disabilities and their families.
“The efforts of everyone involved in last year’s fundraising were truly inspirational and I have no doubt that with the continued support of volunteers, donors, and event participants, they can make an even bigger impact this year.
“The Friends have such a key role to play in their plans, and I would encourage anyone who wants to make a positive impact, whether you could spare a little time, offer practical help, or would like to simply come along and join the fun, to get in touch and be part of something special.”
