Imagine landing in a foreign country, one suitcase in hand, ready to embrace a new culture, but instead you find yourself in a series of laugh-out-loud misadventures. This is the theme of “Ukrainian Dream”, a comedy show that dives into the hilarious highs and cringe-worthy lows of living abroad. As someone who has been in the tricky waters of an expat life, I found this show not only entertaining but also incredibly relatable.

“Ukrainian Dream” follows the life of Dima, the artist himself, who moved from Ukraine to Berlin nine years ago. Dima takes a humorous jab at a range of topics including Putin, Berlin clubs, interracial relationships, shark attacks, nuclear war, and more. It’s a thrilling and comical show. One of the standout episodes perfectly captures this. Dima decides to go out partying one night, and, amongst all clubs, he visits Berghain with no knowledge about it. Berghain is a renowned LGBTQ+ club in Berlin known for its strict door policy.

Only think of the tales Dima could share about the club….The show shines in capturing the quirky nuances of life abroad as Dima compares the contrasts between his homeland of Ukraine and his new home in Germany. Despite being entirely different countries, he highlights the surprising similarities they share and how they can learn from each other.

On the night of the performance, we had a diverse crowd: Australians, Romanians, Londoner, a couple from Bristol and a Ukrainian (that was me). According to the artist himself, the previous night’s performance was nearly sold out and packed with Ukrainians. During the show, there was a moment when we delved into the history of Ukraine. Being Ukrainian myself, I was already familiar with much of it. However, I discovered that the majority of the audience was largely unfamiliar with it.

As someone who faced the tough decision of moving to a different country a few years ago — trust me, it was not an easy choice — this show brought back a rush of memories. While Scotland wasn’t my first choice, it ultimately became my destination. Dima’s quirky experiences in Germany felt like excerpts from my own expat diary, making the show both relatable and hilarious.

“Ukrainian Dream” is a must-watch for anyone who has ever lived abroad or is curious about the expat experience. Its humor, heart, and authenticity make it stand out in the sea of other comedy shows. Whether you’re reminiscing about your own adventures or looking for a good laugh, this comedy show definitely delivers in every episode.
