The A7 heading towards the Melville Dykes Roundabout.
Over the school summer holidays roadworks have been ongoing on the A7 near Melville Golf Centre, at the Melville Dykes Roundabout. The required road closures and temporary traffic lights have been causing congestion and delays for the last 5 weeks.
We asked the council for an update on the project.
The current phase of work “Phase 1” will end this Sunday (17th August), which is the end of the 6th week of work (as planned). Lasswade Road will be reopened and the traffic lights removed The council will then move onto Phase 2.
Phase 2 – Tesco > Hardengreen and bus Lay-by at Viscount Drive.
This section will see formation of further footpaths, drainage and lighting linking in to Eskbank Roundabout (Tesco). Lane narrowed to allow work but normal traffic flows at reduced speed. No traffic lights required and expected impact is minimal.
Phase 3 – resurfacing of carriageway, line marking – these works expected to be delivered towards the end of September.
Work will be done out of hours as a full road closure is required. Road will be closed in evening and night with diversion in place, therefore. Times still being confirmed but likely to close 7pm to avoid rush hours and reopen each morning around 7am (or before).
Phases 2 and 3 are part of a previous project, fully funded by developer contributions to:
– Resurfacing 12,000 m² of road
– Better, dimmable street lighting
– Improved drainage
– Safe crossings and better pedestrian access while keeping the current road width of 7.3m
– Green/blue strips to separate pedestrians from the road and add drainage where possible
All of the above is NOT part of the ‘A7 Urbanisation Programme’ which the council recently consulted on in March and which will be delivered at a later date.
