A Bonnyrigg man has been recognised for his tireless work cleaning up the local area, caring for the local environment and inspiring others to do the same

Tram driver Vernon Miles spends a lot of his spare time picking up litter in the Bonnyrigg and is regularly spotted at all hours in his high-viz jacket.

Local residents Nicky Johnson and Alison Malcolm thought that Vernon should get some recognition for his efforts and so he was nominated him for a Tesco Community Hero. Both women then organised the community to vote for him.

Nicky said:

“Like most people in the area, I am so in awe of Vernon’s kindness and determination to tidy up our local area, no matter the weather. Some days I’ve seen him out there picking up to 6 bags of litter in the cold Scottish winter. It’s so selfless and makes such a difference to our beautiful area.”

Over 380 residents voted for him and so this morning he got a surprise knock on the door and was presented with £650 Tesco Vouchers.
