Supporting-Local-Businesses

Written by Midlothian View Editor, Phil Bowen

For quite a while Midlothian View has displayed a mix of local and national adverts which we have obviously done to generate advertising income.

We have always wanted to just support local businesses by providing them with the opportunity to reach our 20,000+ monthly readers but we felt we needed to back this up with national adverts.

The national adverts have been provided by the Google AdSense advertising network. The downside of these AdSense adverts is that we have no real control of what adverts are displayed and the adverts compromise the reader’s experience as they can be intrusive. It has also necessitated us displaying a cumbersome cookie consent cookie. But it has also meant that we have not been 100% committed to local businesses.

Unlike many other online newspapers we have always prided ourselves in the experience we provide when reading the news. Adverts are necessary to generate income but we have resisted the temptation to be greedy and proliferate our articles with lots and lots of adverts. We have observed other newspapers showing as many as 30 adverts in one article. We will never take this shortcut!

So starting from today we are just going to back local businesses even if this damages our revenue initially.

So if any local business wants to advertise with us then please get in touch by emailing info@pigeonpenguin.com
