We are fortunate to live in a country with natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture, making it a prime destination for visitors from across the globe. But while the big cities are often front and centre, local tourism is the real backbone of our economy, supporting businesses, sustaining jobs, and keeping our communities thriving. Sometimes we forget how lucky we are and are unaware of the wealth of attractions on our doorsteps.
Here in Midlothian, we have historic castle, museums, vibrant country parks and nature trails, and award-winning local food and drink.
Staycations have surged in popularity, and we should do everything possible to make it easier for people to experience our local attractions. Investing in tourism infrastructure, promoting events, ensuring good public transport links will all help support our local businesses and create a welcoming environment for visitors while making life better for residents.
Importantly, a thriving tourism community creates jobs across many sectors. From hospitality to retail and transport, the opportunities are vast. That’s why it is essential we continue to support the sector.
We must also recognise the challenges the sector faces. Rising costs, and the impact of UK Government policies such as the increase in Employers National Insurance contribution.
Local tourism is not simply about economic benefits; it also fosters a sense of pride in our communities. It allows us to celebrate what makes our area unique and encourages both residents and visitors to appreciate what we have here.
So next time you’re planning a day out, why not visit Dalkeith Country Park, Rosslyn Chapel, Vogrie Country Park, Lord Ancrum’s Wood and surround yourself in the stunning nature our county offers, or if you are sporty, you could support one of our local football teams, visit nature trails or practice your golf skills at Melville Golf Centre.
