Lasswade 15s Tournament

Reporter Richard Payne

With the first League fixture less than four weeks away, it’s time for Lasswade’s 15-a-side tournament this Saturday.

Well established now as part of the pre-season build-up both for the hosts and the guest teams, the tournament is an opportunity to try out the full 1st XV squads against a number of opposition teams.

Guests this year are regulars Glenrothes from Caledonian Div 1 and RHCougars who were close challengers for promotion from National 3 along with Lasswade but were shaded into fourth place.

Making up the foursome and first time contenders are Kelso who have played in the second tier of National Rugby for a number of years.

The tournament format this year will be a round robin league with each team playing each other.

First kick-off is at 13.30pm.

Leading out the host team will be Mark Billingham, elected Lasswade captain for the third successive season and his seventh season overall in this role. Having won National League 3 by a convincing margin to regain third tier status, Billingham is looking forward to meeting some old and some new rivals in the months ahead. With most of last season’s winning squad still available and good attendance at pre-season training Billingham is confident of making an impact in BT National League Division 2.

Further pre-season friendlies have been arranged. On Friday evening on14 August at 19.30pm both the 1st and 2nd fifteens host Peebles at Hawthornden and on Saturday 22 August the 1st’s travel to Watsonians.

The full season starts for Lasswade at home to Biggar on 29 August. Kick-off 15.00pm.
