Islamophobia exhibition at Dalkeith Library

Islamaphobia-Exhibition

Written by Midlothian View Editor, Phil Bowen

November is Islamophobia Awareness Month and highlights discrimination against people of the Islamic faith and showcases the positive contributions of Muslims to society.

The campaign is supported by the Police, local councils, journalists, the media, councillors, MPs, mosques, universities, schools and community organisations.

MEND (Muslim Engagement and Development) is an organisation that works to tackle Islamophobia and to encourage political, civic and social engagement by British Muslim communities. An exhibition by MEND will be on display at Dalkeith Library from Monday next week. This exhibition illustrates examples of Islamophobia and challenges some of the misinformation about Muslims.

The exhibition can be visited at Dalkeith Library between 10am – 5pm on Monday and Friday, 10am – 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday and 10am -1.00pm on Wednesday and Saturday during 23 – 26 November before it moves to be displayed at the Scottish Parliament.

Depute Provost and the council’s Equalities Champion, Councillor Connor McManus said:

“Islamophobia Awareness Month aims to shine a light on anti-Muslim hate and discrimination. Islamophobia is an exaggerated fear, hatred, and hostility toward Islam and Muslims that is perpetuated by negative stereotypes resulting in bias, discrimination, and the marginalisation and exclusion of Muslims from social, political, and civic life.

“In an equal society everyone should be able to practice different beliefs without the threat of prejudice. In my role as Equalities Spokesperson, my aim is to ensure that Midlothian can be an inclusive place for everyone.

“I would encourage people to come along to view the Islamophobia exhibition which we are fortunate to have on display in Midlothian before it moves to the Scottish Parliament.”
