To mark the Year of Young People 2018, Midlothian Council and the Lord-Lieutenant of Midlothian have launched a new awards scheme to celebrate the county’s amazing young people.

Midlothian’s Young People Awards will recognise the contributions of young people to communities across the county.

Nominations for each of the six awards can be made by individuals, youth organisations, schools and colleges and employers.  Nominations are open now.

Nominees should be aged between eight and 26 years old and must live, study or work in Midlothian at the time of their nomination.  The closing date for nominations is 29 June 2018.

A judging panel, which will include a young person representative, will then select winners for each award category.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony, hosted by Midlothian’s Lord-Lieutenant, Sir Robert M Clerk Bt, at Penicuik House on 31 August 2018.  Each winner will also receive a prize on the day that they can gift to a Midlothian community group or local charity of their choice.

The six award categories reflect the various positive contributions of young people to Midlothian. The themes of participation, enterprise and regeneration are common in each of the categories.  The categories are:

  • Caring and Volunteering
  • Local Community
  • Sport and Physical Activity
  • Arts and Culture
  • Achievement in Learning
  • The Midlothian Prize

If successful it is hoped the awards could become an annual event on the Midlothian calendar.

Midlothian’s Lord-Lieutenant, Sir Robert M Clerk Bt, said:

“I am constantly impressed and inspired by the outstanding contributions made by young people to our communities across Midlothian. Through this new awards scheme being launched in partnership with Midlothian Council, I am delighted that we will be able to recognise some of the achievements of young people in sports, arts and education and in making a significant difference to the lives of others in our area.”

Councillor Jim Muirhead, Deputy Leader of Midlothian Council and Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said:

“We are delighted to join the Lord-Lieutenant in launching these awards. Midlothian’s Young People Awards are a great opportunity to recognise the contributions of young people who have made a real difference in communities across Midlothian.

“They are also a fantastic way to celebrate the Year of Young People 2018 here in Midlothian.  I hope many take the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the contributions of young people in the local community by nominating them for Midlothian’s Young People Awards.”

Part of the Scottish Government’s programme of themed years, 2018 is the Year of Young People.  The year aims to inspire Scotland through its young people, celebrating their achievements, valuing their contribution to communities and creating new opportunities for them to shine locally, nationally and globally.

Midlothian’s Young People Awards are kindly sponsored by:

  • Dalkeith Country Park and Restoration Yard
  • Hunters Coaches
  • Procure Wizard

Nominations can be made online on the Midlothian Council website at www.midlothian.gov.uk/yoyp
