A significant section of the Melville Road bridge wall has collapsed. The B6392 road is now closed from the Justinlees roundabout, with a diversion in place via the Tesco and Dobbies roundabouts.
The road closure will cause commuting woes in the morning and evening as this road is well used and will put added strain on the already busy A7 and other routes within Midlothian.
A statement from the council said that a detailed assessment is required before the bridge is repaired and that this process is likely to take a considerable period of time.
