Midlothian MP Owen Thompson has been confirmed as the SNP Chief Whip on a permanent basis. Mr Thompson, who has had a role in the Whips office since his first election in 2015, took over as interim Chief Whip earlier this year. The confirmation that Mr Thompson will continue in the role on a permanent basis was announced by the SNP Group Leader Ian Blackford this evening.

Commenting, Mr Thompson said:-

“I am delighted to accept the position as SNP Chief Whip on a permanent basis. The role of the whip is crucial to ensure we work well together and achieve the best results for the people that elected us, so it is a real honour to be trusted with this task, particularly in these difficult times. Having done the job on an interim basis for a wee while now, I know what I’m letting myself in for, and downtime will never be an issue! I relish the opportunity and the challenges that come with the responsibility.

I very much look forward to working constructively with everyone both within the SNP Group and across the House. Now it’s time to roll up my sleeves and get on with the job.”
